The Poetry of Michael Langston

(40) TO LAURA: GOOD-BYE POEM

It's Sunday morning,
I am home alone,
The sun is shining brightly
Through my living room window,
My telephone sits silently
On the table beside me,
And sadly I realize:
You are gone;
You have turned away from me.
It's alright though;
I understand...

You deserve to have
The very best
That life has to offer:
To love and be loved.
And as long as I exist,
As long as breath
Escapes my lips,
There will always be someone...
Someone in this world
Who loves you.

Though I must keep myself
At a distance,
Know that my love for you
Remains undiminished,
That I will hold your memory close...
Close inside my heart
Where it will always be a part...
A part of me forever.

Good-bye, my love,
Though I wish
With all my heart
That it didn't have to be.
